Typical Day on Tenley
On a sunny Monday afternoon, I stumbled across a particularly relaxed group of Washington Mentorship Program students. Painting nails, listening to jams, & joking about their weekends, I was struck by their carefree attitudes & breezy demeanor. I realized it was a typical AU situation and that this seemingly laid-back group of freshmen was actually a smart, sassy group of highly motivated interns & students balancing papers, internships and jealous-worthy weekends.
Julia Schroeder, Chipotle loving PR champion
Hailing from the small town of Blairestown, New Jersey, Julia has been loving the Washington Mentorship Program because she gets to soak in the hustle & bustle of DC. She spends her days interning at Homefront Communications, a PR firm downtown that deals with big name clients and specializes in satellite and radio tours. Julia’s got it goin’ on… from her great taste in movies (favorite being Step Brothers) to her cool internship, she’s having fun and making the most of her new life in DC.
Neel Gupta, huge goals & epic weekends
Neel’s the type of guy you just want to hang out with. If he could watch one show for the rest of his life, it’d be Entourage and if you’re trying to make a weekend game plan, Neel’s your guy. He’s wasted no time getting to know all the cool spots in the District, whether it’s going to concerts at the Armory or getting his club on at Shadowroom. But let’s not forget his day job; Neel interns for No Labels, a political non-profit that focuses on bipartisan problem solving. He’ll probably major in English Lit and someday wants to run his own analytics firm.
Jessica Gurrentz, a Tenley trifecta: clever, cool & charming
Jess is the whole package, but seriously. For starters, she was in the Guinness Book of World records for playing in the largest flute orchestra with Sir James Galway, she is ridiculously well spoken AND she interns for Hillel, the international organization that promotes Jewish life on college campuses. She loves her internship because it gives her a break from the regular school week and she gets to be heavily involved in cool projects in marketing, communications & social media. She’s not sure what her life plan is yet, but it’s safe to say, Jess is going places.
Campbell O’Connor, an aspiring politician loving up on DC
Campbell’s boyish good looks are not the only thing he has going for him in the political arena. He’s interning at the office of Senator Blumenthal, thinking about an interdisciplinary CLEG major and has starred in a music video with over 1 million hits on YouTube. Campbell grew up in Connecticut, enjoys Arizona Iced Tea and sees JFK as one of his role models. Washington Semester has been good to him; he loves the tight knit community, the quiet Tenley campus and being close enough to the city that he can spend his weekends going to ridiculous concerts.
